Why Do We Seek?

July 21st, 2009

Have you ever wondered what makes us seek new ideas, new friends, new clothing, new information or new meaning, new Truth?  I think that to one degree or another, each of us is a Seeker and each one of us wants to fulfill our own desires.

I believe we seek in order to satisfy our own inner desires for whatever we think the next good thing should be in our life.  I believe that we are here on this earth in a self-directed and self-decided mission to understand ourselves.  We can satisfy our desire for the next good thing we seek in many different ways.

When we were small children, our desires were smaller.  We wanted a good best friend.  We wanted that one shiny marble to play with or that one sweet baby doll.  We wanted to be able to stay up later each night as the older people in our lives could.  We wanted to not miss out on one good thing.  We were in an adventure of acquisition and we continuously sought after the next good thing.

As we grew older, our desires became a bit more refined as well and they became shaped by the ideas we had formed in our growing-up years.  A simple request – like a new bicycle – could mean getting good grades in school; doing our chores around the house; behaving in the way our parents expected us to behave; and helping out around the house.  We began to recognize that there was always something more for us to seek.

When we became adults, we had a fresh new list of things to seek after:  a new place to live out of our parents homes; a new wardrobe of our own choosing; a new field of studies.  Seeking always seemed to be about something new and wonderful that we currently did not have, did not own.

Now that we are adults, we continue to seek for new things.  Frequently, those new things are inside of ourselves, since we have fulfilled all the outside dressings, the outside fixtures.  We seek new desires, new understanding, new accomplishments, new successes and we work to discover new things about ourselves that will help us to gain the things we seek.

Reading self-help books, working with a life coach, or joining consciousness development workshop groups is a wonderful way to continue to satisfy us in our seeking.  The internet is bursting with opportunities like this. Each of us wants to become more, to have more, to do more, to enjoy more, to understand more.

I am thinking there might be a few readers who have lost the thrill of seeking for the next good thing.  I want you to know that you can re-new your ability to seek with a joy that you have never experienced before. For you folks, I want to recommend that you ask yourself three small questions and please allow the inner you to answer them honestly and fully.

What do you truly want?
What does it take to get what you truly want?
Are you willing to take the first steps to get what you truly want?

You only have to take the first few steps.  Your wonderful mind will show you the next one, and a few after that.  Each step we take contains within it the next step we need to take and that one after that.  All we have to do is look for it, to seek.  You have to be willing to pursue your own desires.  I advise you to stop along the way and look at how good achieving what you have been seeking makes you feel.  Continue to ask yourself those three questions and to do what is necessary and you will back on the Seeker track. Imagine how you will feel about yourself after many years of accomplishments from your seeking.  This is a gem of great price.
